Press Release: Yazda welcomes the report by the United Nations (UN) Commission of Inquiry on Syria and calls for immediate action

June 17, 2016 — Yazda welcomes the report issued today by the United Nations Commission on Inquiry on Syria, which supports the genocide ISIS is committing against the Yazidi people. The report, determined through a myriad of interviews and extensive documentary material, emphasizes that ISIS’s abuse of Yazidis amounts to Genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

Yazda, an organization that advocates for the Yazidi people of northern Iraq, has played a significant role in documenting the genocide by providing the Commission access to data including victim testimonials and statistics on mass graves. Still, this is not enough. The Yazidi Genocide has not been properly documented, and we urge the international community to immediately investigate further in a formal legal context.

There must be no impunity for crimes of this nature. Yazidis have been suffering and continue to suffer from an ongoing genocide. The international community must acknowledge and stand by its obligation to prevent genocide and punish perpetrators under the Genocide Convention. The freedom and safety of the remaining 3,200 Yazidi people must be ensured, as well as the funding of care for victims of this genocide.

Yazda joins the UN in its repeatedly call for the Security Council to refer the case to the International Criminal Court for a formal investigation to prosecute the countless of violations of international law committed during the non-international armed conflict.
