Yazda’s director for Baghdad Office, Mrs. Hutham Al-Hashimi met with the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Dr. Mahdi Al- Alaq to discuss different issues related to the situation in Sinjar and Nineveh Plains including judicial processes and accountability, education, post-ISIS stabilization, and compensations and government programs the families affected by ISIS attacks. Also discussed at the meeting, the current situation of Yazidi captives, including children and women and girls, who remain unfree.
Thousands of Yazidi children are believed to be taken by families in Mosul and elsewhere in the areas controlled by ISIS between 2014 and 2018. Yazda requested that an ultimatum of 1 month be given to families to return Yazidi children, women, and girls, to be followed by a search plan and severe legal punishment for those who fail to free the captives and hand them over to their families.
Dr. Mahdi Al-Alaq welcomed Yazda representative and re-affirmed that the Iraqi government will continue to do its best to solve the issues and challenges facing minorities, including the support and compensation for aiding return of IDPs to their homeland, improve providing public services to affected areas in Nineveh and support accountability of ISIS members.
Yazda would like to thank Dr. Mahdi Al-alaq for his efforts and continuous cooperation to support Iraqi vulnerable groups. As part of Yazda program funding by the USAID and in partnership with IOM, Yazda was able to staff its office in Baghdad, a necessary representation to ensure full recovery of the institutions and state functions.
