Yazda is delighted to welcome Dr. Denis Mukwege and the director of his foundation, Esther Dingemans, to Kurdistan Region of Iraq to meet with survivors of Yazidi Genocide and those who endured sexual slavery.
Dr. Denis Mukwege is a world-renowned gynecologist and human rights activist, Sakharov Laureate, and the Founder and Medical Director of Panzi Hospital and Foundation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He has received many other notable awards including the United Nations Prize in the Field of Human Rights (2008), the Right Livelihood Award (2013), the Seoul Peace Prize (2016), multiple nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize, and was included on the list of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2016. Panzi foundation and Hospital is one of the largest nonprofit service providers of victims of wartime rape and sexual slavery in Africa.
During his visit, Dr. Mukwege will meet with survivors, community leaders, and NGOs and other actors providing support to the victims.
Panzi, Stichting Vluchteling and Yazda will explore ways to improve services to the victims in cooperation with other actors in the region.
