First Trial on Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity Committed Against Yazidis Opens in France
Date: 16 March 2026
Paris, France: Today, the trial against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) member Sabri Essid begins before the Paris Assize Court. Essidwill be tried in absentia meaning the trial will proceed without the presence of the accused, who is presumed to be dead. He faces charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and complicity of these crimes against Yazidi women and children between 2014 and 2016.
This is a landmark case, as it is the first time France prosecutes an individual for genocide and crimes against humanity against members of the Yazidi community, following similar trials held in Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Kosovo and Belgium. According to monitoring done by Yazda, France therefore becomes the 6th country to prosecute an ISIL members for international crimes.
The French native from Toulouse travelled to Syria in early 2014 to join ISIL, where he adopted the kunya (nom de guerre) Abu Dojanah al-Faransi. Since his departure, Essid has never returned, and is presumed dead since February 2018.
Essid was placed under formal investigation in 2019 for genocide, and the crimes against humanity of slavery, deprivation of liberty, torture, rape, persecution and other inhumane acts. He is accused of having enslaved several Yazidi women and their children with some of them having told of repeated and brutal rapes, as well as no access to food and water and basic care while in captivity.
Two survivors participate as civil parties in the trial and will courageously testify about their gruelling ordeal under Sabri Essid.
Natia Navrouzov, Executive Director at Yazda, commented:
“This historic trial is of profound importance to the Yazidi community. It sends a clear message that the crimes committed against the Yazidis will not be forgotten and that countries such as France recognise the enslavement and systematic abuse of Yazidi women and girls as acts of genocide. Yazda honours the extraordinary courage of the survivors who have chosen to participate in these proceedings and share their testimonies so that those responsible may finally be held accountable. We also commend the French authorities for taking this important step toward justice and for affirming that perpetrators of genocide will not escape accountability.”
Yazda's lawyers, Emmanuel Daoud, Justine Vinet and Marie Lehmon of Vigo commented:
“We acknowledge the significance of this first trial for genocide and crimes against humanity brought before French courts for the Yazidi community. It represents a further step in the fight against impunity of the crimes committed by ISIL against the members of the Yazidi community. The firm is honored to be working alongside Yazda, which has been fighting for the recognition of the rights of genocide victims for over a decade.”
Yazda will participate in the legal proceedings as civil party and will monitor the trial daily to keep the community informed of any developments, reiterating its commitment to seeking justice for the Yazidi community and all victims of ISIL.
The trial, which is public, is scheduled to take place at the Paris Assize Court from 16 to 19 March. The verdict will be handed down on 20 March.
